As I am about to start doing this again as soon as February ends I thought I might be able to dodge a bullet this time around and find out if there are any sites or tools out there that fellow forum users know about? Ideally it would let me specify our address, the keywords to check for and the search engines to check...

When using automated tools to check rankings you have to be careful that you don't contravene Googles guidelines. Only last week I had a client ringing up to say that Google had caught them using an automated tool and had prevented them from carrying out any searches on Google for a period of about 18 hours. Just bare this in mind and definetly don't go for anything like webpositiongold.
The tool i've used previously is called www.advancedwebranking.com and is better than most because it uses Googles API. Another to consider is www.agentwebranking.com although I havn't any experience with this.
Hope thats of help.
Kind Regards,
Andrew Allfrey

I've used Agentwebranking for over 2 years now and it's superb. The software works perfectly and customer service queries have been answered quickly and intelligently.
They now use a 'tunnel' system to which means all the queries the software sends effectively are sent from AWR's office to the search engine. Effectively AWR are then carrying the risk of breaking a search engine's terms.
Before using the tunnel our company's IP was blocked by Google for a few hours. This only happened once in over 2 years and since the tunnel was implemented there have been no problems at all.
I consider it worth the risk.
